1928 Reference Data
Two models of eights were introduced this year, the Custom Eight and the Standard Eight (both referred to as Model 443 on the same wheelbase). The Six (also referred to as Model 526 & 533, on two wheelbases) was continued in this production year.
This would be the last year for the Packard Six , until it was brought back in 1937. In 1928, management felt the Packard Six had no place in a luxury car lineup.
The smaller 136" wheelbase Eights were dropped in favor of the the Standard Eight, which had all the typical Packard luxuries and the Custom Eight, which dropped the level of luxury just enough to make it to the top of the mid price market.
Model: Custom Eight
Series: Fourth
Introduced: July 1, 1927
Description
This model changed with the introduction of a plethora of body styles with emphasis on custom bodies by Dietrich, LeBaron, Rollston, Holbrook, Judkins, Derham, Murphy and Fleetwood. Some European body makers also made custom bodies on a limited basis.

1943 – 45 Reference Data
The 1942 automobile production year ended February 7, 1942 with the last Packard to roll off the line on February 9, 1942. A photo was taken of the last Packard to roll off the line along with sign that employees held up which read:
Here's the last PACKARD 'Til we win the war. It's all out on ENGINES To even the score!
The Packard Motor Company answered the call during World War II and was dominant in several areas, notably for producing "Liberty Engines" such as the Rolls Royce Merlin aircraft engine and the Packard V-12 Marine engine for PT boats.
Packard produced 55,000 Rolls Royce Merlin aircraft engines.
Packard produced 12,000 Packard V-12 Marine engines for PT boats.
Packard continued to supply vehicles to the military used primarily as staff cars. Many Generals as well as Admirals had Packard Limousines or sedans.
In 1945, The Packard Motor Company was involved with classified research and development work on Gas Turbine Engines.
Packard will forever be remembered for its war efforts and major contributions to winning the war. The Packard employees who helped win the war, a lot of which were women, received many awards for their efforts, some of which were Award Pins. Some of those award pins can be seen in the Library, Showroom page.
1946 Reference Data
The Clipper Eight, Clipper Six, Clipper Super Eight & Custom Super Eight were continued again after the war.
The Clipper Deluxe Eight was introduced this model year.
Note 1: The Twenty-First series spanned 1946 and 1947. Packards produced during the 1946 "model year" have body style numbers in the 16XX series, while those produced for sale as 1947 models have body styles numbers in the 21XX series. There are no other differences between 1946 and 1947 Packards.
Note 2: The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate is attached to the driver's side cowl, just forward of the windshield, under the hood. A number stamped on this plate will give body style number, followed by the production numerical sequence number, for example "XXXX-2nnn" where "XXXX" is the Body Number and "2nnn" is the production sequence number starting with 2001.

Model: Clipper , Super Eight, Custom Super Eight
Series: Twenty-First
Introduced: April 18,1946
Description
As with the Juniors, these "Senior" models have the wider thicker center grille bars matching the outer portion of the grille, and in addition, the grille extensions wrapped around the front fenders. Super 8's and Custom Super 8's had cloisonné hubcap badges. Inside the Super was handsomely furnished in broadcloth, more or less like the lower priced Eight. The Custom was an elaborate blend of the best Packard had to offer. Created exclusively for the Custom were seat cushions and backrests on a foundation of individually wrapped "luxury type coil springs," which ensured even weight distribution and noiseless operation and were adjustable by dealers to any measure of firmness. Genuine genuine (or imitation) leather was applied to seat and door kick panel pads. Mosstred carpeting covered the floor and a total of seven interior lights were installed: 4 were courtesy lights operated by the doors, there were 2 reading lights for the rear seat passengers, and a map light for the front seat. Overhead, Packard fitted the Custom with its unique fore-to-aft headliner on the standard wheelbase cars. The Custom Super 8's had no side script identifying the car. Added for the 21st Series were two Clippers for seven passengers: a sedan and limousine. The distinguishing features were jump seats in the rear compartment, and available options of two additional heaters for the rear seat, and a separate radio for the rear seat passenger. The limousine added a black genuine genuine (or imitation) leather upholstered front compartment and a division window. Three chassis were offered, namely: Custom Su8 (2126 148" and 2106 127") and Su8 (2103 127").

Model: Super Eight, Super Eight Deluxe, Custom Super Eight
Series: Twenty-Second
Introduced: September 8, 1947
Description
This model is easily recognized by the absence of trim on the hood while the front bumper forms part of the grill. The upper chrome Molding is wide and the tail lights are flush to the rear fenders. The Super Eight and Super Eight Deluxe had a horizontal bar grille. The Super Eight Deluxe was identical to the Super Eight except for the upgrade to the interior, which included identical upholstery and carpeting to that of the Custom Super Eight. The Custom Super Eight has an egg crate grille front which extends into the front bumper and duplicated on the rear of the car between the taillights, and a wide belt-line of chrome Molding which continues around the trunk. Also, the Custom Super Eight has Cloisonné hubcap badges, the magnificent 9 main bearing 356 CU IN engine and on the 127 WB closed cars, the front to rear seamed headliner. Mosstred Carpet was furnished on all closed cars in the Custom Super Eight and Super Deluxe Eight line. In addition to the 231 148" WB sedans and limousines in the Custom Super Eight line, 1,941 156" WB chassis were sold for Henney funeral business or ambulance bodies. It was typical of Henney and Packard that to maintain proper perspective with the much longer cars, an additional row of grille "egg crating", and about 2 1/2 inch more sheet metal was added to the bottom edge of these very long wheelbase cars.

1949 Reference Data
The Clipper Six, Standard & Deluxe Eight, and Super Eight, Super Eight Deluxe & Custom Super Eight were continued this model year, until May.
In May, the 1949 23rd Series was introduced, discussed further down this page.
Note 1: The Twenty-Second series spanned 1948 and 1949. Packards produced in 1949 (until May) are referred to as a 1949 22nd Series. In May of 1949, the 1949 Model year saw a midyear transition from the 22nd series to the 23rd series. The 1949 22nd series cars were identical in all respects to the 1948 22nd series cars. Cars left unsold at the end of the Model year in 1948 were renumbered in this way, and sold as 1949 models, with an increase in price which averaged $125. The price increase was not applied to Custom 8 models.
Note 2: A 1949 22nd series Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate is attached to the driver's side cowl, just forward of the windshield, under the hood. A number stamped on this plate will give body style number, followed by the production numerical sequence number, for example "XXXX-2nnn" where "XXXX" is the Body Number and "2nnn" is the production sequence number starting with 2001.
Rather than repeat the model information again for the 1949 22nd Series, please please see the appropriate section of the 1948 22nd series reference on the previous page (1948 Reference page). However, I will list the 1949 22d Series production statistics and then continue with the 1949 23d Series, below.
The mid-year changeover from 22nd to 23rd Series makes the 1948-49 Model years a bit confusing. I hope by not repeating the 1948 22nd Series Model Information below, you will not get confused.
This is the last year for the Six in the 1949 22nd Series. Most reference books show that the last Six made was in 1947, however, there were a few taxis and export cars made in 1948, and just a couple in 1949.
In May of 1949, the 23rd Series was introduced continuing with the Model Standard & Deluxe Eight and the Model Custom Eight.
Upgraded was the Model Super Eight to the 127" wheelbase, and were now available only in the 6 passenger touring sedan and club sedan models. Introduced was the Model Super Deluxe Eight (not to be confused with the Deluxe Super Eight of the 22nd series which were merely an interior upgrade to the Super Eight 141" wheelbase cars). These models had a wheelbase of 127" for the 6 passenger cars, and exterior trim nearly identical to the Custom Super 8 models.
Discontinued were the Model Six, Super Eight (141" wb) and in the Custom Eight line, the Club sedan and both 148" wb cars.
Note 3: The Twenty-Third series was introduced in May, 1949 and spanned 1949 and 1950. Packards produced in 1949 are referred to as 1949 23rd Series and Packards produced in 1950 are referred to as 1950 23rd Series.
Note 4: A 1949 23rd series Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate is attached to the driver's side cowl, just forward of the windshield, under the hood. A number stamped on this plate will give body style number, followed by "9", followed by the production numerical sequence number, for example "XXXX-9-2nnn" where "XXXX" is the Body Number and "2nnn" is the production sequence number starting with 2001.

Model: Standard Eight, Deluxe Eight
Series: Twenty-Third
Introduced: May 2, 1949
Description
This model is easily recognized by rear window glass which was enlarged from that of previous years, the exterior trim strip which ran the length of the car now ran above the wheels, all the way from the headlights to the taillights. The taillights now protruded from the bodywork (except for the Station Sedan, which continued unchanged from the 22nd series). The multi-piece front bumper of the 22nd series was now simplified to a plain bumper on all series. There were no significant mechanical differences from the 22nd series, other than the fitting of the Ultramatic transmission as standard equipment on all Custom Eight cars. The Ultramatic transmission was made available in November 1949 to the rest of the line. Also, a 156" WB chassis was sold for Henney funeral business or ambulance bodies.

The 200 & 200 Deluxe, 250, 300 and 400 were introduced this model year.
Model: 200, 200 Deluxe
Series: Twenty-Fourth
Introduced: August 21, 1950
Description
In 1951 Packard made a complete change in the appearance of their product line, and introduced a different model identification nomenclature. The new body had more glass, a roomier interior, and thoroughly up to date styling. A new one piece curved windshield rode above a front opening hood. The grille consisted of a large single piece main casting in the traditional Packard shape. The 1951 Packard models have Packard spelled out in block letters on the hood, and an oval grill. The 200 Deluxe added additional trim to the body and upgraded interior appointments.

Description
During the 1951 Model year, Packard introduced its first 2 door coupe without a center post, the "Hardtop Convertible" model, called the Mayfair, and later, a companion Mayfair Convertible, which was a true convertible. These cars were built on the "250" chassis, which included a larger, quieter engine, a more deluxe grille, and sporty interiors. Model: Packard Cavalier
Series: 54th
Introduced: January 15,1954
Description
This lowest cost model in the senior (127" wheelbase) Packard line was very little changed from 1953. The front fender trim was extended to the rear door, and a set of 3 "cat whiskers" on the rear door joined the upper front trim to the lower rear trim. The headlight rims received a small fin on top, and the backup lights were incorporated in the tail light design. This was the only Packard line car to utilize the 5 main bearing engine in 1954; horsepower was increased by a 4 barrel carburetor. The Cavalier was available only as a 4 door sedan.

Description
The top of the line Packard cars used the 9 main bearing engine, which was enlarged to produce more horsepower. The convertible and hardtop models used the 122" wheelbase, while the Patrician continued with the 127" wheelbase. In appearance, the only external distinguishing mark to identify the top of the line is that on the Patrician and 149" wheelbase cars, the rear door has a trim plate between the upper an lower trim strips, and on the Caribbean, unique side trim. The Packard Pacific and Convertible use the same external trim as the Cavalier. The extended wheelbase chassis (5413 and 5431) were continued for one last year, for the Henney built Corporation Limousine, Executive sedan, and Hearse/ambulance bodies. Two Standard
